GENERAL SAFETY RULES  
n
Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off  
before plugging in. Carrying tools with your finger on  
the switch or plugging in tools that have the switch on  
invites accidents.

Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow  
all instructions listed below, may result in electric shock,  
fire and/or serious personal injury.  
nRemove adjusting keys or wrenches before turning  
the tool on. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a  
rotating part of the tool may result in personal injury.  
nDo not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance  
at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better  
control of the tool in unexpected situations.  
nUse safety equipment. Always wear eye protection.  
Dust mask, nonskid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing  
protection must be used for appropriate conditions.  
nDo not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long  
hair. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be drawn  
into air vents.

WORK AREA  
nKeep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered  
benches and dark areas invite accidents.  
nDo not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres,  
such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases,  
or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the  
dust or fumes.  
nDo not use on a ladder or unstable support. Stable  
footing on a solid surface enables better control of the  
tool in unexpected situations.  
nKeep bystanders, children, and visitors away while  
operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to  
lose control.  
TOOL USE AND CARE  
ELECTRICAL SAFETY  
nUse clamps or other practical way to secure and  
support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding  
the work by hand or against your body is unstable and  
may lead to loss of control.  
nDo not force tool. Use the correct tool for your appli-  
cation. The correct tool will do the job better and safer  
at the rate for which it is designed.  
nDouble insulated tools are equipped with a polarized  
plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will  
fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does  
not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still  
does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a  
polarized outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.  
Double insulation  
eliminates the need for the three-  
wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply  
system.  
nDo not use tool if switch does not turn it on or off.  
Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is  
dangerous and must be repaired.  
nDisconnect the plug from power source before making  
any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the  
tool. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of  
starting the tool accidentally.  
nStore idle tools out of the reach of children and other  
untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of  
untrained users.  
nMaintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp  
and clean. Properly maintained tools with sharp cutting  
edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.  
nAvoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as  
pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an  
increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded.  
nDon’t expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.  
Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of elec-  
tric shock.  
nDo not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the  
tools or pull the plug from an outlet. Keep cord away  
from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Replace  
damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase  
the risk of electric shock.  
nCheck for misalignment or binding of moving parts,  
breakage of parts, and any other condition that may  
affect the tool’s operation. If damaged, have the tool  
serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by  
poorly maintained tools.  
n
When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor  
extension cord marked “W-A” or “W”. These cords  
are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electric  
shock.  
PERSONAL SAFETY  
nUse only accessories that are recommended by the  
manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be  
suitable for one tool, may become hazardous when used  
on another tool.  
n Keep the tool and its handle dry, clean and free from  
oil and grease. Always use a clean cloth when clean-  
ing. Never use brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based  
products, or any strong solvents to clean your tool.  
Following this rule will reduce the risk of loss of control  
and deterioration of the enclosure plastic.  
nStay alert, watch what you are doing and use common  
sense when operating a power tool. Do not use tool  
while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol,  
or medication. A moment of inattention while operating  
power tools may result in serious personal injury.  
nDress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.  
Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves  
away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long  
hair can be caught in moving parts.

nMake sure your extension cord is in good condition.  
When using an extension cord, be sure to use one  
heavy enough to carry the current your product will  
draw. A wire gauge size (A.W.G.) of at least 14 is  
recommended for an extension cord 50 feet or less  
in length. A cord exceeding 100 feet is not recom-  
mended. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The  
smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. An  
undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting  
in loss of power and overheating.  
nAlways wear safety glasses. Everyday eyeglasses  
have only impact-resistant lenses; they are NOT  
safety glasses. Following this rule will reduce the risk  
of serious personal injury.  
nProtect your lungs. Wear a face or dust mask if the  
operation is dusty. Following this rule will reduce the  
risk of serious personal injury.  
nProtect your hearing. Wear hearing protection during  
extended periods of operation. Following this rule will  
reduce the risk of serious personal injury.  
nInspect for and remove all nails from lumber before  
using this tool. Following this rule will reduce the risk of  
serious personal injury.  
nInspect tool cords periodically and, if damaged, have  
repaired at your nearest Authorized Service Center.  
Constantly stay aware of cord location. Following this  
rule will reduce the risk of electric shock or fire.  
nIf the power supply cord is damaged, it must be re-  
placed only by the manufacturer or by an authorized  
service center to avoid risk.  
nSave these instructions. Refer to them frequently and  
use them to instruct others who may use this tool. If you  
loan someone this tool, loan them these instructions  
also.

DOUBLE INSULATION  
EXTENSION CORDS  
Double insulation is a concept in safety in electric power  
tools, which eliminates the need for the usual three-  
wire grounded power cord. All exposed metal parts are  
isolated from the internal metal motor components with  
protecting insulation. Double insulated tools do not need  
to be grounded.  
When using a power tool at a considerable distance from  
a power source, be sure to use an extension cord that has  
the capacity to handle the current the tool will draw. An  
undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in  
overheating and loss of power. Use the chart to determine  
the minimum wire size required in an extension cord. Only  
round jacketed cords listed by Underwriter’s Laboratories  
(UL) should be used.  
WARNING:  
When working outdoors with a tool, use an extension cord  
that is designed for outside use. This type of cord is desig-  
nated with “WA” on the cord’s jacket.  
The double insulated system is intended to protect  
the user from shock resulting from a break in the tool’s  
internal insulation. Observe all normal safety precautions  
to avoid electrical shock.  
Before using any extension cord, inspect it for loose or  
exposed wires and cut or worn insulation.  
NOTE: Servicing of a tool with double insulation requires  
extreme care and knowledge of the system and should be  
performedonlybyaqualifiedservicetechnician. Forservice,  
we suggest you return the tool to your nearest authorized  
service center for repair. Always use original factory replace-  
ment parts when servicing.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTION  
**Used on 12 gauge - 20 amp circuit.  
This tool has a precision-built electric motor. It should be  
connected to a power supply that is 120 volts, 60 Hz, AC  
only (normal household current). Do not operate this tool  
on direct current (DC). A substantial voltage drop will cause  
a loss of power and the motor will overheat. If your tool does  
not operate when plugged into an outlet, double-check the  
power supply.

Keep the extension cord clear of the working area.  
Position the cord so that it will not get caught on lumber,  
tools or other obstructions while you are working with a

OPERATION  
WARNING:  
The tool should never be connected to a power supply  
when you are assembling parts, making adjustments,  
cleaning, performing maintenance, or when the tool is  
not in use. Disconnecting the tool will prevent accidental  
starting that could cause serious injury.  
TURNING THE SAW ON/OFF  
See Figure 2.  
n To turn the saw on: Depress the switch trigger.  
n To turn the saw off: Release the switch trigger.  
ADJUSTING THE SPEED  
See Figure 3.

The variable speed feature allows the saw to operate at  
speeds that can be increased by rotating the dial from  
1 (slow) to 6 (fast). The dial is conveniently located on the  
handle, allowing operator control of blade speed.

SELECTING BLADES  
Selecting the correct type of blade is important in order to  
obtain the best performance from the saw. Select the blade  
based on the application and on the material you wish to  
cut. Selecting the right blade will give you a smoother, faster  
cut and prolong the life of the blade.

Blades with fewer teeth, 10 teeth per inch (TPI) are typically  
used for cutting wood, while blades with more teeth are  
better for cutting metal or plastic. We recommend 14 TPI for  
plastics and soft metals and 18 TPI for hard metals.

tools when changing the blade.  
n Unplug the saw.  
n Lift the blade release lever.  
n Insert the blade fully, tooth side down.  
n Lower the blade release lever.

OPERATION  
OPERATING THE SAW  
See Figure 5.  
n Secure the workpiece to a work bench or table with a  
vise or with clamps.  
n Make sure the saw blade is clear of any foreign material  
and that the power cord and extension cord are out of  
the blade path.  
n Hold the saw firmly in front of and clearly away from  
you.  
n Mark the line of cut clearly.  
n Depress the switch trigger to start the cutting action.  
n Set the base assembly against the workpiece.  
n Move the blade into the workpiece.  
NOTE: Do not force. Use only enough pressure to keep  
the saw cutting. Let the blade and saw do the work. Keep  
pressure on the base, against the workpiece.

PLUNGE CUTTING WOOD OR WALL BOARD

n Secure the workpiece to a work bench or table with a  
vise or with clamps.  
n Make sure the saw blade is clear of any foreign material  
and that the power cord and extension cord are out of  
the blade path.  
n Hold the saw firmly in front of and clearly away from  
you.  
n Mark the line of cut clearly.  
n Choose a convenient starting point inside the cutting area  
and place the tip of the blade over that point.  
n Rest the front edge of the base assembly on the  
workpiece and hold it firmly in position during the cut.  
n Depress the switch trigger and allow the saw blade to

reach full cutting speed.  
WARNING:  
WARNING:  
Make sure the blade does not touch the workpiece until  
the motor reaches full speed. Failure to heed this warning  
can cause you to lose of control of the saw and result in  
serious injury.  
Blades longer than 6 in. can whip and should not be used  
for plunge cutting. Failure to heed this warning can resut  
in serious personal injury.  
n Tilt the saw downward until the tip of the blade starts

cutting the workpiece.  
Cutting into electrical wiring can cause the blade, the blade  
clamp, and the saw bar assembly to become electrically  
live. Do not touch metal parts when cutting into a wall;  
grasp only the insulated surfaces on the tool. Make sure  
hidden electrical wiring, water pipes, and mechanical haz-  
ards are not in the blade path when cutting into a wall.  
n Allow the saw to penetrate the workpiece.  
n Tilt the saw until the blade is perpendicular to the  
workpiece.

OPERATION  
METAL CUTTING  
See Figure 7.  
You may cut metals such as sheet steel, pipe, steel rods,  
aluminum, brass, and copper with the saw.  
Observe the following tips when metal cutting:  
n Be careful not to twist or bend the saw blade.  
n Do not force the tool and use a slow speed setting.  
n Use cutting oil when cutting soft metals and steel. Cutting  
oil also keeps the blades cool, increases cutting action,  
and prolongs blade life.  
n Never use gasoline since normal sparking of motor could  
ignite fumes.  
n Clamp the workpiece firmly and cut close to the clamping  
point to eliminate any vibration of the work. When cutting  
conduit pipe or angle iron, clamp the workpiece in a vise  
if possible and cut close to the vise. To cut thin sheet  
material, “sandwich” the material between hardboard or  
plywood and clamp the layers to eliminate vibration and  
material tearing.

n Always keep firm pressure on the base to hold it securely  
against the workpiece.  
MAINTENANCE  
Electrictoolsusedonfiberglassmaterial,wallboard,spackling  
compounds, or plaster are subject to accelerated wear and  
possible premature failure because the fiberglass chips and  
grindings are highly abrasive to bearings, brushes, commu-  
tators,etc.Consequently,wedonotrecommendedusingthis  
toolforextendedworkonthesetypesofmaterials. However,  
if you do work with any of these materials, it is extremely  
important to clean the tool using compressed air.  
WARNING:  
When servicing, use only identical Ryobi replacement  
parts. Use of any other parts may create a hazard or  
cause product damage.  
WARNING:  
Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side  
shields during power tool operation or when blowing  
dust. If operation is dusty, also wear a dust mask.  
LUBRICATION  
All of the bearings in this tool are lubricated with a sufficient  
amount of high grade lubricant for the life of the unit under  
normal operating conditions. Therefore, no further lubrica-  
tion is required.  
GENERAL MAINTENANCE  
Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most  
plastics are susceptible to damage from various types of  
commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use  
clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, etc.  
WARNING:  
Do not at any time let brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-  
based products, penetrating oils, etc., come in contact  
with plastic parts. Chemicals can damage, weaken or  
destroy plastic which may result in serious personal  
injury.
